At the 1758 Battle of Carillon, French Canadian soldiers flew the white-cross-on-blue Carillon Sacré Coeur — a banner bearing the Sacred Heart at its center — and routed a British force nearly four times their size. Three decades later, the Catholic peasants of the Vendée stitched that same Heart onto their tunics and standards as they rose against a revolution that sought to erase the faith from France entirely. They lost the war. They never abandoned the Heart.
